Abstract
we have investigated the effects of bismuth nitrate on the endogenous antioxidants in order to elucidate its antioxidative mechanism. The treatment with bismuth nitrate significantly increased the activities of catalase, GSH peroxidase and GSH reductase and protein-SH level in the liver. On the other hand, bismuth nitrate increased the activities of GSH reductase and GSH S-transferase and nonprotein-SH level in the kidney. Protein oxidation was assessed by measuring the content of carbonyl group. Treatment with bismuth nitrate significantly decreased the content of carbomyl group. Cycloheximide abolished the induction of catalase activity by bismuth nitrate in the cultured liver cells. Bismuth nitrate markedly increased the expression of catalase mRNA levels compared to control. these results suggest that bismuth nitrate exerts an antioxidative effect by increasing endogenous antiosidant.
